The Sun and the Clouds

Remember this post way back when? Probably not, because no one read my blog way back when (but since then I've gained you 5 readers - woo-hoo!!)

It was about noticing. About how most times we don't even notice that we're not noticing. Back then, I was making an attempt to be more observant, more appreciative of all of the beauty that surrounds me. I'm still working at it; it's something that I have to make a conscious effort to do most times. But you know who helps me? Emma.

Emma notices clouds, the sun, the moon, the water, she sees beauty in all of it and the best part of it is, she points it out to all of us. Monday, as we were on the way to school, (it was a very gloomy, rainy day), she said:

'Mom, look at all those black clouds. That's not good'.

Me: 'No. I think it's going to be a rainy day'.

Em: 'But if you look real close, you can see the pretty white clouds underneath over there'.

Me (struggling hard to see without crashing the car): 'I can't see them'.

Em: 'Yeah, you see, they're trying to push the ugly clouds out of the way so they can get through'.

I just grin.
She looks at me and says 'What, Mom?'. I say 'I just like the way you put things sometimes'.
She shrugs her shoulders and says 'Well . . . it just makes them seem more alive'.

Exactly.

(and then there was John M. yesterday, while trying to watch his Dora DVD in the car. The sun had the nerve to come out and shine in his eyes. He asked me in a really whiney tone, 'Mom, can you turn the sun OFF?!' There's a lot I can do, but there's one thing I can't. Sorry-o).

(PS. John has started POOPING in the potty! I can't remember the last time I was this excited.)

How lovely it must be to think like Emma!

John M is funny, maybe a little opposite of Emma.

Ya for pooping in the potty! I wish Alex would pee, or poop, or maybe even sit on the potty!

It's a gift, being able to see the white clouds beneath the black!

Oh I share the very same excitement. Really!

If someone had told me 5 years ago that I'd get so damn excited about poop... I'd have thought they LOST THIER MIND!

My youngest, David is my Emma. He has always drug me around to "see" all the stuff he does. The saying in our house is that "life just looks different to David".

Yea - pooping in the potty!!

The 'Emma's' of this world give us a fresh and renewed view of things we need to be aware of. Thank God for Emma!

Oh how lucky you are to have such a sweet daughter! You'll enjoy getting to share these same stories with Emma's daughter someday.

Wisdom really does come from kids, doesn't it? What she said is SO true!!

Hi! Great story. It's a shame we have to lose some of that wisdom as we age, but you are creating a safe place for to have all that wisdom in, good for you!

That's probably one of the best reads that I've read in a while. I enjoy hearing how God works through our little children. She is so sweet and beautiful inside & out. That really touched my heart.

I try not to take the everyday beauty for granted, it's hard, and I don't always do a good job, but I try.
Congrats to John on the potty thing.

ahh, it's so true. That's funny about he sun. My Jack thinks he can tell the sun to go away. Whenever it gets in his eyes he commands it to go away.

Emma sounds a lot like me in that respect. I am always noticing little things like bugs, birds, clouds, trees, flowers, etc. And the colors! wow, I am glad she will fill my shoes for me. Not many people notice the little things in life to be grateful for.

And I remember another time you were excited about poop in the pot...when Anna pooped in the pot and she stood up and said "Look Mom, it's windin'up!" That was cute.

Rats come!

Lookin' forward to lunch again when I can eat real food. 3 more weeks.

Yea for poop in the potty! We have yet to experience that with Miss A, but then she won't be 3 until March. Sigh...

I really love this post Renee. My girls are constantly reminding me to be thankful for all the little things in life! And for that I am very thankful. :)
